The COVID-19 pandemic has had extreme effects on almost all organisations – Markham College has been no exception. This sudden change required a quick adaptation to the new health and sanitation measures provided by the government, ensuring the maintenance team’s own safety as well as that of any other visitor to the school.

This year the Latin American Heads Conference (LAHC) was made up of eight schools and its goal was the development of eight projects focused on environmental sustainability. We had from 22 – 24 May to make a change in the community of Matucana.
Markham College is the first school in Peru that will integrate the Rock and Water approach into their educational programme. The Galapagos experience surpassed all my expectations and went beyond that. In previous trips we have always been given some sense of control and consciousness, however, we always followed a certain plan.
The girls’ Juveniles team represented Markham on their recent trip to the Grange School in Chile last May. Their captain, Ariana Castro, shares some thoughts on the experience:
In 2018, for the first time ever, the S4 Leaders Training Trip took place in Cusco. We had the chance to collaborate in the Queña Raymi Project by planting trees for the community alongside 100 Cusco COAR students, 250 locals and 170 people from the Markham community who fundraised enough money to plant 10,000 trees.
Markham College had the honour to win the BBVA’s unique experience, showcasing the original CONMEBOL trophy on school grounds.
Previous to the arrival of the Lima 2019 Pan-American Games, on Wednesday 22 May we had the opportunity to receive Luisa Villar (Roosevelt School teacher and Peruvian representative of the Pan-Am organisation) and Juan Leon (a well-known Peruvian swimmer) in the Lower School.

We are excited to announce that one of our former students, Franco Cubas (graduated in 2014), was recognised in the 2019 Aerospace Engineering Awards and awarded the H.S. Stillwell Problem Solving Scholarship from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

We are pleased to announce one of our own Old Markhamians, Fernando Tamayo Grados (graduated in 2005), has received a Rising Star for Young Alumni Award from the Faculty of Business and Economics at the University of Melbourne. This award recognises his emerging leadership in Peru and Latin America promoting sustainable development through social enterprise.
The weekend of the 16th and 17th of March, the first Chincha service trip of 2019 took place. Around 140 students volunteered to go, including 30 attendees from San Silvestre School.
During the summer break, the 2003/2004 (age group) football team participated in the 11th edition of the Mayor’s Cup International Showcase against teams from 19 countries and 27 U.S states.
It is our pleasure to announce that one of the three finalist groups in the Desafío de Emprendimiento Social HACIA Democracy 2019 is “Un hogar, un futuro”, by a group of 13 young Markham students. This challenge aims to develop young entrepreneurs with a strong civic commitment. The idea is to identify a problem inside of a community and propose an innovative and sustainable project to solve it. A great prize will be offered to the project that demonstrates extraordinary innovation, impact and sustainability.
This season Markham’s Summer School celebrated 30 years since it began offering summertime activities to students. This year we were lucky to have 200 participants.
