What can a School do to protect staff and students from COVID-19?

The COVID-19 pandemic has had extreme effects on almost all organisations – Markham College has been no exception. This sudden change required a quick adaptation to the new health and sanitation measures provided by the government, ensuring the maintenance team’s own safety as well as that of any other visitor to the school.

LAHC Conference – Matucana 2019

This year the Latin American Heads Conference (LAHC) was made up of eight schools and its goal was the development of eight projects focused on environmental sustainability. We had from 22 – 24 May to make a change in the community of Matucana.

Rock & Water at Markham College

Markham College is the first school in Peru that will integrate the Rock and Water approach into their educational programme. As part of the school’s effort to empower young people and proactively combat bullying, the College participated in an exclusive training session that supports its focus on human relations and values such as respect for one another.

Service Project in Queña Raymi, Cusco

In 2018, for the first time ever, the S4 Leaders Training Trip took place in Cusco. We had the chance to collaborate in the Queña Raymi Project by planting trees for the community alongside 100 Cusco COAR students, 250 locals and 170 people from the Markham community who fundraised enough money to plant 10,000 trees.

The Copa America at Markham

Markham College had the honour to win the BBVA’s unique experience, showcasing the original CONMEBOL trophy on school grounds.

Preparing for the Lima 2019 Pan-American Games

Previous to the arrival of the Lima 2019 Pan-American Games, on Wednesday 22 May we had the opportunity to receive Luisa Villar (Roosevelt School teacher and Peruvian representative of the Pan-Am organisation) and Juan Leon (a well-known Peruvian swimmer) in the Lower School.

2019 Aerospace Engineering Awards

We are excited to announce that one of our former students, Franco Cubas (graduated in 2014), was recognised in the 2019 Aerospace Engineering Awards and awarded the H.S. Stillwell Problem Solving Scholarship from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

2019 International Food Fair

This year’s International Food Fair was extra special due to it occurring on the day of the inauguration ceremony for the Regional Round Square Conference hosted by Markham and San Silvestre students.

DT featured in DATA magazine

We are pleased to share the latest edition of The Design and Technology Association’s magazine where Markham College’s Design and Technology (DT) department was featured thanks to the efforts made last year by Ms Rachel Wyncoll (Head of the DT department) to inspire young students to become involved in this subject.

Graduate receives Rising Star Award

We are pleased to announce one of our own Old Markhamians, Fernando Tamayo Grados (graduated in 2005), has received a Rising Star for Young Alumni Award from the Faculty of Business and Economics at the University of Melbourne. This award recognises his emerging leadership in Peru and Latin America promoting sustainable development through social enterprise.

Chincha Trip – March 2019

The weekend of the 16th and 17th of March, the first Chincha service trip of 2019 took place. Around 140 students volunteered to go, including 30 attendees from San Silvestre School.

Mayor’s Cup International 2019

During the summer break, the 2003/2004 (age group) football team participated in the 11th edition of the Mayor’s Cup International Showcase against teams from 19 countries and 27 U.S states.

Un hogar, un futuro – HACIA Democracy

It is our pleasure to announce that one of the three finalist groups in the Desafío de Emprendimiento Social HACIA Democracy 2019 is “Un hogar, un futuro”, by a group of 13 young Markham students. This challenge aims to develop young entrepreneurs with a strong civic commitment. The idea is to identify a problem inside of a community and propose an innovative and sustainable project to solve it. A great prize will be offered to the project that demonstrates extraordinary innovation, impact and sustainability.

Summer School 2019

This season Markham’s Summer School celebrated 30 years since it began offering summertime activities to students. This year we were lucky to have 200 participants.

Markham initiative recognised by UNESCO

We are pleased to share with you “Relatos Docentes”, a publication resulting from a gathering of educators who presented their initiatives to promote peace in school. This was created by the UNESCO Office in Lima, in coordination with Red de Educadores Humanistas and the Corriente Pedagógica Humanista, COPEHU. In this edition, they recognise Markham’s very own Activity Centre created by the Lower School’s counsellor, Patricia Diaz.

School updates regarding coronavirus

Markham College is currently closed in accordance with the decrees issued by the government during the state of emergency. During this time we will be providing full online learning for all our students. We are determined to ensure that learning continues at the same pace and with the same effectiveness as normal.

How does online education during the pandemic work for Early Years students?

It is evident that education is going through many changes, as well as great opportunities, since the teaching-learning process is currently migrating from face-to-face to a virtual one. However, this implies a great challenge, as in the case of preschool education, since it depends on various factors to guarantee its success.
