GIVING
Social responsibility is at the heart of Markham College. Since its foundation, our students and teachers have actively engaged in service projects to help low-income communities. These initiatives have included constructing schools or houses, training public school teachers, and getting involved in worthy causes.
The sustainability of these programmes is possible thanks to the generosity of all members of the Markham Community, which is reflected in the participation in various activities throughout the year, including our flagship annual Markham Giving Gala. Year after year, the realisation of our vision to empower all to be agents of positive change in Peru and beyond relies on the generosity of students, parents, alumni and the broader community.
The pivotal role played by our Institutional Advancement Department is evident in leading strategic initiatives to secure the resources necesary for our projects. These resources enhance our student’s educational experience and support the implementation of our social responsibility programme, all while fostering solid relationships with our community members, alumni and other external stakeholders.
While our fundraising focus might evolve from year to year, our commitment to enhancing our community and shaping our students into dedicated citizens of our country and the world remains steadfast as a brilliant legacy of our founding members. We invite you to contribute to this tradition by supporting one of the social service projects.
If you are an Old Markhamian, the Markham Connect Platform allows you to reconnect with the community and give back to your school. You can actively participate in exciting events, mentoring programmes, networking and various giving opportunities. Join us in continuing the legacy of making a positive impact in our society.

We firmly believe that Markham College´s community bears a moral responsibility to positively contribute to society and the environment that surrounds us all.
Markham has instituted a comprehensive social service programme that is seamlessly integrated with various extracurricular activities beyond the classroom. In this programme, students, parents, and the community actively engage in fundraising, manual labour, and other initiatives. Our students willingly assume the role of socially responsible agents of change working towards sustainable solutions for challenges within their community
Markham started supporting Chincha in 2007 following the earthquake that left hundreds of homeless people. Initially, emergency assistance was given, and thanks to Markham Trust’s leadership, we rebuilt the I.E.P. 22266 school in Sunampe, Chincha. In 2010, we began building houses for vulnerable families in the area. Since then, more than 6,000 student volunteers aged 11 to 18 have built 465 houses. In addition to providing families with a home, it has allowed Markham students to bond with villagers, better understand their country, and develop leadership skills.
In 2024, The Markham Building Project was launched as part of the Social Service programme. Markham students will continue to contribute their time and efforts to help vulnerable communities in Peru. We aim to raise US$ 15,000 to build infrastructure, reinforce bonds with communities in need and have a sustainable impact.

Six years ago, Markham College embarked on this collaborative effort with the State’s High-Performance Schools (COAR) under an agreement between the Markham Trust and the Ministry of Education (MINEDU), aiming to contribute substantially contribute to education in the country. Over this period, Markham College has successfully trained 100 teachers from COARs across Peru’s 25 regions. Additionally, between 2016 and 2019, Markham College teachers trained over 400 teachers from public schools, targeting those whose learning standards in mathematics, reading, and writing fell below the Ministry of Education benchmarks.
In 2021, the Markham Spanish Department, in coordination with the Markham Trust, conducted the first online workshop on pedagogical strategies for the Spanish Baccalaureate course, with the participation of 32 COAR teachers from public schools. Building on this success, the workshops continued in 2022, training 40 teachers from various parts of the country. In 2023, 57 teachers from across the country visited Markham for workshops in different IB subjects, including English, chemistry, physics, visual arts, music, extended essay, history, coordinator training and coaching.
In October 2023, Markham teachers reciprocated the learning exchange by travelling to different COARs in Lima, Piura, and Ica to conduct workshops in Art, Drama, and Physical Education. This impactful initiative is made possible through generous donations from members of the Markham Community, enabling the Markham Trust to fully finance the workshops, covering expenses such as tickets, food, and accommodation for the participating teachers.
In 2024, Markham will receive more than 60 teachers for the annual workshops.

Markham College students help low-income families, that have no access to safe piped water systems on desertic slopes in peripheral areas of Lima, by constructing FogNets on the top of the mountain. This is part of Markham College’s social responsibility programme.
The FogNet is a mesh made of plastic material with small holes that, when placed strategically in the right location, harnesses up to 400 litres of water per day per panel. This is achieved through the condensation of atmospheric water vapour without the need for liquid water or external sources of energy. The water is then collected through a system of pipes and tanks for domestic and agricultural use.
The construction of fog catchers dates back to 2009 by Markham College and was institutionalised in 2021 with the Dream-catchers project. The Markham Board of Trustees decided to support a group of Markham College student volunteers who worked with the NGO Peruanos Sin Agua and built 12 fog catchers to provide water for the community of El Trébol in San Juan de Miraflores. These fog catchers were able to help 35 families.
The project resumed in 2023 under the name Nubes de Cambio. To date, the students have managed to ensure that 60 families in Valle Escondido, district of Villa Maria Del Triunfo in Lima, have access to water through the installation of 30 fog catchers. In 2024, Markham volunteers built 100 fog catchers to help families in Pamplona.
- 30 fog catchers will provide water for 60 families
- One fog catcher provides approx. 2,800L per week (for 2 households), so 1,400L for each household
- Each household saves S/.1,300 per year and receives more water than they currently do
