Student Leadership
At Markham College, we nurture responsible leaders who demonstrate integrity, commitment, and teamwork. Leadership roles are available in both Primary and Secondary and are earned through a fair and rigorous selection process. These roles empower students to make meaningful contributions by supporting school events, service activities, and initiatives like the Swimming Gala, commendation assemblies, performances, parent meetings, and student campaigns.
Each year, two students from Secondary 4, 5, and 6 are chosen to represent the entire student body. They lead the student leadership team and set an example through their behaviour, academic excellence, and participation in extracurricular activities. These captains also have a voice in shaping the school’s future through their involvement with the School’s Board of Directors.
Students in Primary 5, as well as Secondary 5 and 6, can be appointed as Prefects. These students play a key role in fostering a supportive and respectful school environment. Prefects lead by example, promoting cooperation, discipline, and unity across the school community. They embody the values of service, honesty, loyalty, and maturity.
House Captains, selected from Primary 5 through to Secondary 5, take on the responsibility of organizing House activities and competitions. They inspire their fellow students to actively participate, ensure discipline, and represent their House with pride in school events. Chosen by their peers, these roles recognizes leadership, dedication, and House spirit.
Markham College hosts a range of student councils, including Adventure, Environmental, Intercultural, Service, Wellness, and Inclusion councils, all aligned with the Round Square IDEALS. Each council is led by a captain who is responsible for guiding the team in organizing activities and events throughout the year. These councils offer students a platform to develop leadership skills while championing important global values.
This structure ensures that leadership at Markham College is not just about responsibility but also about growth, teamwork, and making a positive impact within the school and beyond.
