·        Cheddar Gorge

Not far to the south of Bath lies the Cheddar Gorge, a narrow, steep river-eroded limestone valley, famous for its caves.  For several hundred years, the dark humid caves were in use for the storing and ageing of the locally made Cheddar cheese.  Nowadays, cheese is still made in the valley, as is clotted cream, served with scones and tea in the small street side cafes.  Apart from exploring the caves, viewing spectacular stalactites, stalagmites, underground rivers and waterfalls, visitors can also see fossils and the remains and implements of prehistoric cave dwellers.  The West Country is renown for its cider production, which can also be viewed, and sampled (by over 18s!) in local mills.

The Pinnacles rise hundreds of feet above the road in Cheddar Gorge.

17.00               Return to the Bath Youth Hostel for Evening Meal and Activities
