Leadership Opportunities
At Markham College, Students are taught that true leadership is found in those whose convictions are rooted in personal responsibility, kindness and justice. Opportunities for student leadership in the school's community are fostered.
There are a substantial number of opportunities for students to assume Leadership roles through out the College, and range from management of house activities to holding key leadership positions. A high level of responsibility is passed on to students individually and collectively. Varied councils in Markham are chaired by students, and various leadership positions of consequence are shared by the students. The system of prefects offers senior students the opportunity of student leadership and the guidance of younger students, as does the successful functioning of student government
Round Square (RS)
International RS Conferences: The annual conference is an ideal forum for students to demonstrate leadership skills, both in the planning process and in all the varied conference activities that take place in a truly international context. In 2008 the Round Square International Conference was co-hosted by the Glenlyon-Norfolk and Collingwood schools in British Columbia, Canada. The Markham delegation was assigned to the Collingwood campus, in a truly stunning setting close to the shores of the Pacific Ocean and surrounded by dense conifer forests. Six Upper School student delegates were selected to represent Markham at this event, and these delegates played a pivotal role in all the student led activities that occurred at the conference. They were also outstanding ambassadors, informing the international community about the diversity of service work carried out by Markham College in many regions of Peru.
Youth Round Square (YRS) Conferences: In 2008 the YRS Conference was held during May at Santa Catalina Island and hosted by Foothill Country Day School, California. Three Middle School student delegates were chosen to represent Markham College, and they participated in a variety of teambuilding, ecological awareness and adventure activities during their stay at this amazing adventure camp setting. All the students made lasting new friendships and came back enthused about the endless possibilities that international collaboration can offer to them and their school community.
Regional Conferences: In February 2008 the first RS Regional conference for the Americas was held at Markham College; 26 Round Square schools from North and South America attended. The marked emphasis of the conference experience was the opportunity to participate directly in service work, at both the earthquake stricken village of Sunampe, Chincha, and in one of the many shanty towns in Pamplona Alta, on the outskirts of metropolitan Lima. Keynote speakers offered their own visions about the world and their proposals for change, and active baraza (discussion) groups challenged students to come up with their own unique responses. Conference attendees also enjoyed touring the cultural wonders of Lima, and its food, music and dance.
