  The Music Programme at Markham

Music is a strong feature at Markham College. More than one quarter of the school is learning to play a musical instrument. There are flourishing bands, ensembles, orchestras, string quartets, rock bands, choirs and folkloric groups throughout all three sections of the school. Students from Pre-Kinder to S1 have weekly music lessons. From S2 onwards, Music becomes an optional subject for the IGCSE examinations. All students have the opportunity to participate in the private instrumental lessons programme. There are currently 55 instrumental and activities teachers contracted by the College for almost every musical interest a child might have!Markham offers a comprehensive Music Programme to any student serious about studying music. Those students may complete the IGCSE Music examinations and continue on to study music in the IB Programme; some students also choose to take the London College of Music examinations. Markham is the only school in Lima recognized as a Latin American representative of the LCM, authorized to provide these examinations.

Early Years: Students in Early Years develop their musical abilities by singing and body movement in weekly music classes. There are two full-time teachers on staff in the Music department in Early Years, and work is designed to be both motivating and creative. Students also have the opportunity of receiving private instrumental lessons, such as violin, recorder, guitar, piano and electric keyboard, and there are currently 70 children enrolled in this programme.

Lower School: Music in the Lower School keeps flourishing and a new purpose-built Music facility has been provided for this purpose. Almost three-quarters of the students in the Lower School take part in a large variety of instrumental lessons, activities and presentations that take place during the year. There is a full-time administrator in charge of the Music Department in the Lower School, supervising a considerable number of full-time and part time specialized music teachers.

Upper School: Over 300 students participate in the Music Programme in the Upper School. Musical appreciation, theory, instrumental interpretation and creativity are encouraged through classroom teaching, musical activities, instrumental lessons and yearly performances. Students who continue on to complete the IGCSE, IB or LCM Music examinations are able to compose and interpret music at a high level.

The London College of Music (LCM)

Markham College was named the Latin American representative for LCM examinations in 2006.  Our first exams were in May of that year and there were around 150 candidates from all Lima (80 from Markham) with different instruments and ensembles. The examiner, Dr. John Howard, director of international examinations, reported that the first results were excellent: 50% of the candidates received Distinctions and all passed their diplomas.
