  Welcome to Upper School

The Upper School is located on the original college site in Miraflores and houses students from Primary 6 through Secondary 5 culminating in the IB and National Programmes. This section is extremely well-resourced and provides students with a broad selection of academic choices staffed by highly-trained specialist teachers.

There are extensive playing fields for physical education and recreation, as well as basketball, squash and fronton courts, a swimming pool and a sports stadium (coliseo) and two general activities rooms. In addition, there are modern computer laboratories (for Primary 6 and Secondary 1 students), laptops (for Secondary 2 students onwards) and Smartboards (all linked within a wireless internet system), 9 science laboratories, a fully-equipped library (English, Spanish and French), and purpose-built art, food & nutrition, design & technology and music and drama rooms. These resources help to make the Upper School at Markham a highly motivating and stimulating environment for our students.

The Upper School at Markham College also has a rich and nurturing environment where students are able to fulfil their individual potential. This environment reflects our strong belief in the importance of diversity in learning, the personal growth offered by a bilingual and bicultural curriculum and a co-educational student body. By graduation, our students are mature and self-confident, responsible for their own learning and well-prepared to meet future academic challenges in either Peruvian or overseas universities.

A Bicultural Perspective

Markham College was founded in 1946 by a group of Anglo-Peruvians who had previously sent their children to the great independent schools in Britain. Rapidly, Markham began to distinguish itself from other schools in Lima and the strong traditions of British-Peruvian education, still honoured today, became firmly established.

From the Peruvian viewpoint Markham College:

  • Successfully prepares students for the entrance examinations of Peruvian universities
  • Fulfils the objectives of the Peruvian Ministry of Education, such that all students should acquire a knowledge of their own language, culture, history and country

From the British viewpoint Markham College:

  • Provides a curriculum broad enough and flexible enough to enable each student to work to their strengths, interests and individual academic abilities
  • Has developed a methodology that is student-centred and with an emphasis on developing individual skills
  • Appreciates that the majority of our students are successfully working in their second language (English)
