Early Years Staff and Pastoral Care

The Early Years staff is a team of highly-qualified teachers, assistants and specialists from Peru and around the world, many of whom are native English speakers.

The class teacher is the primary caretaker of the emotional and developmental needs of each child under their personal care. In Pre-Kinder there are approximately 15 to 18 students per class with one full-time teacher and one full-time assistant. In Kinder and Primary 1 there are approximately 25 students per class also with one full-time teacher and one full-time assistant.

The class teacher is responsible for working with students on topics within a special pastoral care programme. These topics are both age appropriate and topical. The Head of Year is responsible for co-ordinating the class teacher and teachers from each year group to ensure the highest standards of education and personalised learning at each level.

A trained educational psychologist is also on staff in Early Years and is available to provide guidance to parents, teachers and students on a regular basis. Academic support is also provided to those students who may need extra attention. These students are presented with a highly-personalised learning programme designed to give them the skills and confidence they need to accomplish classroom objectives. This may happen within the class, individually or in small groups in the learning support room. English support is also given to small groups of children who have been identified as needing an extra boost.

The school provides regular opportunities for parents to meet with teachers during each Bimester and we encourage parents to make additional appointments with any of their child’s teachers as often as required. We encourage open communication between teachers and parents in order to better care for the emotional well-being of each child and to monitor academic progress.

All of our staff take part in a wide range of ongoing professional training, ensuring that they are up to date with the most recent developments in Early Years education and can apply these to their teaching, taking into consideration our Peruvian context.

Professor Roberto Lerner was also recently invited to help both parents and teachers to better understand the social development of children and the pressures facing families today. Periodic seminars with invited experts are provided for parents on important topics of emotional and social development.
