  FAQ's about Admissions

Frequently asked questions pertaining to Pre-Kinder applicants

Do parents have to speak English?
No! Many parents find that they learn English along with their child. All school communications are sent in English and Spanish. It is school policy for reports on the children to be written in the language in which the subject is taught (Spanish or English). Help is always available for those needing translation.

Are extra-curricular activities available?
Yes. All Early Years students may choose up to 2 activities per week. We have a full range of activities from cooking to jewellery making to baseball. Sports and crafts are often the most popular. All extra-curricular activities are included in the monthly payment, with the exception of a few such as: individual music lessons, ballet classes and Tae Kwon Do, all of which carry a separate cost.

Are there formal religion classes taught in Early Years?
No. We do not have formal religious education lessons in Early Years. However, through our Personal & Social Development (PSD) programme, universal values are taught.

Will my child need extra help with English outside class?
In most cases this will not be necessary. Our system of English Immersion ensures that our students attain the highest standard of English possible.

Frequently asked questions pertaining to Lateral Entry applicants

What do you look for in a L ateral Entry applicant?
It is important to note that Markham College is a bilingual school in which most classes are conducted in English (over 80%). We also follow a British curriculum preparing all students for the IGCSE examinations. Any student interested in transferring from either a national or international school, particularly in years Secondary 3 and Secondary 4, should note that only those students with a strong command of the English language and who have been educated in a school with a curriculum similar to Markham will be accepted for lateral entry positions.

Is there a minimum expected length of stay for a Lateral Entry?
Applicants applying from abroad are expected to stay a minimum of two years in the school. Applicants applying from local schools are expected to finish their remaining studies at Markham in either the National Programme or the International Baccalaureate Programme.

How many places are considered for Lateral Entry candidates?
The number of places available to lateral entry applicants varies from year to year. Most students enter the school at Pre-Kinder level and a limited number of places are available for lateral entries in most year groups.  Places are held in Kinder for those children who are not ready to enter Markham at a Pre-Kinder level.

What is the ratio of National to International Students at Markham College?
There are currently students from 24 countries attending Markham College. However, over 90% of the students are Peruvian.

When do you notify families about admissions decisions?
Applicants are notified of their acceptance within two weeks of their interview with the Headmaster. In some cases an applicant may be placed on a waiting list until a space becomes available.
