SERVICE
Markham is proud of its role in the community, with service projects that date way back before the introduction of the International Baccalaureate Diploma. Of course, CAS (Community, Action, Service) is prominent in many of the service activities organised, but many of our students participate, whether they are IB students or not. Apart from manning the helpdesk at the CSF, the CAS tuck shop, monitoring the library, mentoring, running Students Teaching Students or leading Saturday sports activities, Markham students help at centres for the deaf/blind, abandoned street children, orphaned and undernourished babies and toddlers, the mentally and physically challenged, and the injured. Some of our students devote time outside school to weekend and holiday projects in the community: assisting with the Special Olympics is just one example. Our students have served further afield in communities around Peru: repainting schools and village community centres in Madre de Dios and Puno, cataloguing and refurbishing a provincial museum in Huaral, equipping schools and their students with educational materials and furniture in Caraz and Cajamarca, even rebuilding an earthquake damaged school in Moquegua. Many of our projects go unnoticed or unrecognised, which is typical of the true spirit of service: to give but not to receive.
