DEMOCRACY

Markham encourages its students not only to speak out, but also to participate in the administration of the school community. Our classes elect their own student representatives, and each year group votes for its representatives to the Students' Council. The Students' Council meets regularly to raise and discuss issues of concern with the senior administration of the school. The Students' Council has seen a long list of its suggestions brought to life in and around the school: pastoral issues, buildings, services, administration, routines, uniform, sports, activities, discipline, academics, IT, security, and transport have all benefited from the student voice. The school places great emphasis on student participation and has various other student councils which help provide advice and guidance: the Sports Council, the Cultural Council, the Service Council and the Adventure Council. Students have a great say in choosing their own leadership. Senior students express their preferences annually in the selection of new prefects, Heads of House, and School Captain.A team of budding journalists, keen to inform and persuade the school community, publishes a regular newspaper.
